Program Description

Talitha Koum (TK) Society has been providing transitional housing offering addictions recovery, life skills training, employment and/or educational readiness and mentorship to marginalized women since 2000. TK’s program objectives are to provide women with constant or recurring substance use (and their children) with a safe, nurturing and supportive environment for healing, and to teach the foundational life skills necessary for living in harmony with their community.

TK offers an abstinence-based program rooted in the 12 steps of recovery that requires a minimum 6 month commitment. TK staff support each client with compassion as they journey out of addiction and into a future filled with hope and self-sufficiency.

Our program is divided into four areas:

One on One and Group Counselling

Regular individual counselling sessions are scheduled with each woman and the Program Director and/or Facilitator. Group sessions are held daily. Depending on individual needs, the women receive additional counselling in the community. Goals include:

  • to live drug and alcohol free
  • to deal with substance use triggers
  • to be honest about their feelings
  • to accept the responsibilities of their actions
  • to develop self-esteem
  • to reconcile with family and community.

Anger Management and Conflict Resolution

Activities include written exercises prepared by the Program Director and/or Facilitator, daily discussion groups with the facilitator and role-playing. Participation in community workshops and groups as needed. Goals include:

  • to live in harmony with society
  • to identify anger triggers that led clients into conflict with others in the past
  • to develop appropriate strategies for dealing with their emotions and learn how to have healthy relationships.

The women make plans for new purpose in their lives and are given the opportunity to develop individually appropriate daily and weekly spiritual practices. Goals include:

  • to live soberly as productive citizens in society
  • to connect to their higher power
  • to identify the sources of their personal strengths
  • to become life-long learners with their Higher Power.
